The Commander's Welcome
For more than 60 years, we in AMVETS have taken to heart the credo of service set forth by our organization's founding fathers. In so doing, we endeavor to provide our fellow veterans with the type of support they truly deserve. This outreach effort takes many forms, from the professional advice our service officers offer on earned veterans benefits to our legislative efforts on Capitol Hill to the work done by our hospital volunteers. Other AMVETS members involve themselves in a range of initiatives aimed at contributing to the quality of life in their local communities.
These two areas, veterans service and community service, drive the commitment we have to make a difference in the lives of others. The pages of this website provide more detailed information on each area, as well as a wealth of information for veterans, their families and other interested citizens. Please take a few minutes to review what makes AMVETS the distinctive organization it is. Our aim of building for a better America is an undertaking to which all can contribute. I invite you to join us.

Report by Bud Wilson
LOS ANGELES - Veterans Network poll supervisor Bud Wilson has reported that the most recent poll has been tallied and the voting has been a landslide in favor of Mandatory Funding of the VA health care system. Wilson said, "We're not at all surprised by the vote count. Now, it's time for all of America to get on the bandwagon." S.O.P. on this, and all Veterans Network polls, is to deliver the results to both the Senate and House Committees on Veterans Affairs. Final tally was 3,189 yes votes and 17 no's. New Poll question is: "Do you support the Webb GI Bill (S.22/HR2702) as opposed to the alternative Graham/Lindsey/McCain GI Bill (S.2938)? | |

News release
WASHINGTON, DC - As Veterans Network continues its coverage of pending GI education bills, a recent rally in the nation's capitol brought numerous veterans organizations together to support the 21st Century GI Bill sponsored ny Senator Jim Webb. At a time when the current GI Bill cannot finance even a two year program at many community colleges, and unemployment among young veterans is at nearly 20%, the AmVets organization has announced it has recently partnered with DeVry University, University of Phoenix, and Kaplan University to provide millions of dollars in scholarships and tuition vouchers for active military, veterans, and |

eligible family members. These three universities offer a learning environment specially suited to the needs of those continuing to serve and those who seek to become more competitive in the job market. AmVets National Commander, J.P. Brown III said, "AmVets urges active servicemembers, Reservists, National Guard, and veterans to look into these unique education opportunities. The Webb GI Bill has recently passed the Senate and House votes and awaits the necessary signature from the White House where a possible veto looms. HOW BIG IS YOUR FRYING PAN?
I had just filled up Cowboy Joe's coffee cup for the second time when he said, "Went fishin' the other day".
"Did you catch anything"? I asked.
"Yes, caught enough for me and my wife to have fish for supper. You know, I saw the funniest thing over at the lake".
"What was that"? I asked.
"This old geezer was fishing about fifty yards up the bank from me. Each time he caught a fish he would pick up a small stick laying next to him; measure the fish; keep any fish smaller than the stick; and throw back any fish larger than the stick".
"After a while, I felt it was my duty to go over and tell him there weren't any size limits on the fish".
"You won't believe this, but the old guy said he knew there were no limits. He said the stick was the size of his frying pan, and he couldn't use any fish bigger than the pan.
"Can you imagine that? This guy was throwing back the best fish just because he happened to have a small frying pan".
"I'll bet there are people going through life with a small frying pan around their neck, just making sure every opportunity that comes their way isn't too big".
Think outside the frying pan! |
